A woman outside of time, a landscape outside of history binds together Butseva’s decade long research spanning across state and vernacular archives, oral histories, and former forced labour camp sites in Bulgaria.

Butseva's practice explores the evidential role of absence and engages with missing photographs, erased records, and landscapes that continue to carry the traces of political violence long after official histories have attempted to suppress them.  Shifting through archival material, photographs, texts and sound, the performance lecture reflects on fragments of the woman within history: within the socialist and post-socialist Bulgarian landscape.

Returning repeatedly to the former camps in Belene and Lovech, Butseva treats the landscape as a site of inquiry, tracing memories suspended between visibility and disappearance. Here these archival and architectural encounters are shaped as much by absence as by presence
