Slices of Red investigates personal and social memory in relation to Eastern European communism and the realities shaped under the totalitarian rule in Bulgaria. Using a found photography archive purchased from a flea market in Sofia, I began to preserve the lives of two separate families - mine and the other.
This work studies the struggles of the everyday life, the commonality of behaviour, belonging and experience, whilst creating a collective narrative of a shared communist past. The collages portray mundane scenes and experiences, but the narratives accompanying them unfold elements of the control, propaganda and fear of the time.
